The College of Electronic Science and Engineering was established in 1959 as Department of Semiconductors. The founding chairman was Prof. Dingsan Gao, a famous semiconductor physicist, educator, and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.

There are 178 faculty members and staff in the college, including 130 teachers (68 professors, 40 associate professors and 22 lecturers), 29 experimental technicians (including one technician), and 19 administrative staff. Among the teachers, 120 of them have obtained doctor's degree, accounting for 93%; 82 of them are under the age of 45, accounting for 63.6%.

The college has two first-class disciplines of Electronic Science and Technology as well as Biomedical Engineering and it has the right to grant first-class doctor's degree in the discipline of Electronic Science and Technology. It covers four secondary disciplines with the right to grant doctor's degree and master's degree. Among them, Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics is a national key discipline and Circuits and Systems is a key discipline in Jilin Province. It has the right to grant master's degree in the two majors of Biomedical Engineering and Electronic Information. In 2017, the discipline of Electronic Science and Technology was listed as the first constructed first-class discipline (Group) of Jilin University.

The college has six teaching departments, two experimental teaching centers and five undergraduate majors. At present, there’re more than 2200 undergraduates and more than 500 postgraduates studying here. The college always adheres to the semiconductor-featured school running concept of combination of science and engineering as well as combination of physics and chemistry. It pays attention to cultivating students' rigorous study style and diligent learning attitude. Over the past 60 years, more than 13000 talents of various types have been provided to the country, and many graduates have become the backbones of their units.

It has established nine provincial and ministerial level scientific research bases, including the State Key Laboratory on Integrated Optoelectronics, the "111" Innovation Base of Micro-nano Information Materials and Devices, and the Key Laboratory of Gas Sensors of Jilin Province. The college has always carried out scientific research in face of the world’s cutting edge and the major needs of the country, forming a research direction with distinctive characteristics of optoelectronics and sensors. In recent ten years, it has undertaken 657 national, provincial, and ministerial level scientific research projects, and received 462 million yuan of research funds. 2963 SCI retrieval papers have been published; 236 Chinese invention patents have been authorized; one second prize of National Natural Science Award and ten first prize of provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological achievements have been obtained.

The college actively promoted the internationalization process. In recent years, more than 300 people, including academicians of US National Academy of Sciences and well-known experts in the field have visited the college and carried out extensive scientific research cooperation and academic exchanges. The number of teachers and students sent to famous universities and scientific research institutes abroad has been increasing year by year, and the overall international competitiveness of the college has been steadily improved.
